Google: mobile marketing to surpass desktop

Google: mobile marketing to surpass desktop Google announced this week that mobile marketing will eventually surpass PC-based marketing due to the rise in smartphone uptake.

This may come as welcome news to businesses looking to expand their marketing onto a mobile platform.

Speaking during an investor webcast, Vic Gundotra, Google Engineering vice president, said that mobile marketing rates had increased "dramatically" in recent years.

He expanded on the many alternative mobile campaigns that could be introduced for the platform that cannot be used on PCs. For example, in-built GPS devices can provide marketers with access to a user's whereabouts, allowing them to target localised information.

Mr Gundotra said that searches on mobile phones using Google had increased five times in the past two years alone.

This could be related to the increase in smartphone sales. According to ABI Research, 25 per cent more smartphones were shipped to the UK in the last quarter of 2009 than in the three months before.
